Gerunds

Here is a big review of gerunds and how to form them.

 What are Gerunds?

• Gerunds are nouns formed from verbs by adding “Ing”. Example: Walk + ing = Walking, Talk + ing = Talking, Work + ing = Working,

• There are a few spelling rules in order to form gerunds correctly. The spelling of a gerund depends on vowels (a,e,i,o,u) and consonants (d,v,g,t,e,g)


 Rules of Gerunds

• If there is more than one consonant at the end of the verb, just add ing.
Example: Think + ing = thinking

• If there is more than one vowel and one consonant at the end of the verb and the syllable is stressed, double the consonant and add ing.
Example: Hit + ing = Hitting

• If there is vowel “e” at the end of the verb, remove the “e” and add ing.
Example: Take + ing = Taking

• If there is “ee” at the end of the verb, just add ing. Example: Agree + ing = Agreeing

• If there is “ie” at the end of the verb, reples “ie” with “y” and add ing.
Example: Die + ing = Dying, Lie + ing = Lying

• If there is two vowels before a consonant at the end of the verb, the consonant won’t be doubled just add ing. Example: Beat + ing = beating

• If there is “c” at the end of the verb, reples the “c” with “ck” and add ing.
Example: Frolic + ing = Frolicking, Mimic + ing = Mimicking

• If there is one vowel and one “l” at the end of the verb, doubled the “l” and add ing.
Example: Quarrel + ing = Quarrelling, Travel + ing = Travelling
